We still glow in the dark... Dear everyone, a lot of people have been asking if and when a new issue of GLW/DRK will come out. The answer is simple: I DON'T KNOW. I don't know WHEN, but there is no doubt that it WILL come out eventually. No issue has looked the same so far, the contents have constantly been changing, but the intention has remained the same: to publish a quality print magazine that covers independent culture in it's many aspects. There have been interviews with legendary bands, unknown bands, bands no one cares about. Hardcore punk, indie rock, hip hop, even black metal. There has been coverage of skateboarders no one has even heard of, and of those with pro models on big companies, features on artist dudes who have since then gone to work for fucking Nike, while others never even got off their asses for one exhibition. It's time to re-think our whole situation. The underground does not suck. Period. It's the consumers that do. Twenty-year-old kids go apeshit over bands reuniting that broke up way before they were even born. This is not fucking Woodstock. Or is it? Seriously, who the fuck needs SS Decontrol or Negative Approach or Gorilla Biscuits play a greatest hits medley in 2008? Who wants to look at Banksy pieces being sold on Ebay? The hot shit is still out there. You just have to dig a little deeper. Look beyond what's being spoon fed. Take a chance and go see a random band. Re-think it all. Many things have changed since we started GLW/DRK a couple years ago. Many independent record labels have gone out of business, skateboard companies are now giving away free DVDs instead of selling them to the kids, the term "emo" has been co-opted and given a whole new meaning that has fuck all to do with what it originally stood for, graffiti writers have been sucking the coporate dick to be featured in car commercials. Henry Rollins has his own TV show. Jason Lee is starring in a major series. Morrissey is still doing records. Who cares? Seriously, WHO CARES? This does not mean that things are better or worse, they are just different. And damn sure things have become different for the printed media. Not even Punk Planet, one of the biggest inspirations when we started GLW/DRK, is around anymore. And fact is that GLW/DRK has to react to this. The times, they are a-changing, baby. And we have to adapt to this, whether we like it or not. We are standing at the crossroads, and we are taking the way that feels right. "Freedom is a road seldom travelled by the multitude", as Public Enemy said 20 years ago. The choice was either feature what's hot at the moment and get paid advertisements in return, or do whatever the fuck we want. This is the spirit that GLW/DRK was started on, and we are not giving up on it. This means: - We no longer offer subscriptions. GLW/DRK is no longer a regular publication (as if it ever was!), so nobody wants to wait 12 months for a new issue. Also, GLW/DRK might turn into a xeroxed one pager one day, or a hardcover book, you never know. So it's just no longer possible to calculate a certain amount that would seem fair. If you have subscribed, you will of course still get the copies you have paid for. - No more record reviews in the magazine. Ramblings about 65447380 records are pretty pointless in print. There will, however, be a review section online at one point or another. Apart from that, it's simple: you send it, we review it. Please send the full product including all the original artwork and lyrics, and as much information as possible. CD-Rs will be reviewed if they are CD-R only releases or demos, not advance copies. There is more to a record than just the music, and if you don't feel that it's worth the time and effort to send us something that's as close as possible to the final retail product that can be found in stores, then it will not be worth our time and effort to review it, and it goes straight to the trash. (Oh, and PLEASE do not send any ska. We hate that shit.) - Submissions? Yes, please. But even more so than in the past, we are VERY picky about what we are going to publish. That said, it feels as if a burden has been taken off our shoulders. The beast known as GLW/DRK is still hungry. It's not here to compete with anyone, it's not an "alternative" to the "mainstream", it's just what it is. Please take it as such. posted on Mon - April 21st, 2008 A message from Rises "Allright, back from Vienna, where the amazing folks at Glow In The Dark Magazine set up a great art show for me and my dear friend, the mysterious Damage, at the wonderful Cafe Huber (best place, EVER). I managed to sell some stuff and do some more. Here are a few pics. Look out for hand painted mesh hats. Also, if you bought one of those off me in Vienna, I really need pics of them, since I had no time to take them before you started rocking them in fine style. Thanks. Thanks to Out Come The Wolves, Team H-Town, A Painted Mayor and Feeding Time for playing throughout the week. You can check out some pics from the Feeding Time show here. Also, due to the ongoing questions from arty peeps and fruits in general about the "concept" and the "theme" behind my crap, i have taken a step forward in this direction by coming up with ridiculous and absurd titles for it. Enjoy." More Rises art can be viewed (and bought!) here. posted on Wed - July 18th, 2007 Two awesome videos! Holy shit, it's the acid drop of faith! And just in case you've never seen it, this is William Spencer's part in the Hollarado video. You won't believe your eyes. Isn't this dude sponsored or what!? posted on Mon - April 16th, 2007 |
